An Extensive Guide to Blinds Types and Materials

Blinds Types

When we talk about “blinds”, it normally pertains to shades and blinds as a whole. Generally, these two have similar basic functions. However, there are differences that distinguish one from the other. So, before you buy blinds online, let us try to understand what they really mean first.

Window Treatment

There are many different kinds of window treatment available on the market today. Depending on your needs, you need to understand what each of these treatments really do so you can choose the right one for your windows. In this article, we will define two of the most common window treatments: blinds and shades.

  1. 1) Blinds: This kind of treatment is available in various types, sizes, and materials. Blinds are often characterised by the individual slats that can be adjusted up or down. You can also adjust the blinds to tilt from one side to another to have more light control.
  2. 2) Shades: Like blinds, they can also come in different sizes, materials, and types. However, shades do not have individual slats. Rather, it is characterised by a single piece of the specified material. Because of this, the adjustments can only be either up or down, not from side to side.

Blinds & Shades Types

  1. 1) Vertical Blinds: Vertical blinds consist of slats that are hung vertically from a track on top of the blind. There are vertical blinds that can open from one of the sides or they can open in the middle. Vertical blinds are more popular when used with floor-to-ceiling windows or as patio doors.
  2. 2) Venetian Blinds: The most popular variant of blinds is the Venetian blinds. They are characterised by the horizontal slats that are held together by a string or a strip on each side. These strips or strings are called tapes. Raising the Venetian blinds will make the bottom slat press onto the slat that is above it.
  3. 3) Panel Blinds: Panel blinds are also popular with patio doors and other windows that are larger. Panel blinds are characterised by sections that run on a track, making it easy to open and close them.
  4. 4) Roman Shades: The concept of Roman shades is pretty similar to most Venetian blinds online. They are usually made from seagrass or jute material and they have different styles. But, when you raise a Roman blind, it will fold in itself just like how the slats of a Venetian blind pile up on top of each other.
  5. 5) Roller Shades: Roller shades often come with a natural or synthetic fabric. The good thing about them is that they have a really simple and easy way of opening and closing. It rolls the fabric on top of the window when it is raised. And, when you want to block outside light, you can just pull the fabric to roll down.

Common Materials Used for Blinds

When you buy Venetian blinds online, you would most likely be given the chance to choose the type of material you want the blinds to be. It is important to choose the right material after considering your living conditions, external weather, and other factors.

Here are a few of the most common materials used to make blinds:

  1. 1) Wood: Wood is probably the most common material in this list. They are beautiful and they give off a classic and elegant look, providing a sense of warmth in the room. Blinds that are made of wood often come in different stains and colours. However, wood blinds may not be suitable for areas with humid and moist environments. Remember that wood is natural and it will contract or expand depending on the certain changes in the weather patterns.
  2. 2) Plastic: If you want to be more economical and you are on a slightly tighter budget, blinds made of plastic would be your best choice. The colour choices of plastic blinds are often wider compared to woods. They can also be used in most living conditions. The only downside is that they may not look that elegant and blinds that have thinner plastic slats can be easily damaged.
  3. 3) Metal: When your priority is using a window treatment in the most humid and moist areas, you may want to start looking for metal blinds online. They almost have the similar look with plastic blinds but they can look a lot better because of the different finishing available.

If you are looking for the right window treatment for your new home or you are just looking for something to add to your current interior design, you can always count on blinds and shades to do the trick. They can offer both comfort and style. Moreover, they are available online so you can easily shop for them in the blink of an eye!
